I love this poem. When you become parents, you quickly realize you can’t have it all, and sometimes you end up trading one dream for another. We have challenging, discouraging days, yes, but overall I try to live with a heart of gratitude that God gave us our two precious girls. I try not to let a day go by where my girls don’t hear me thanking God out loud that He put them in our family. I want my girls to know without a doubt, “You are wanted! You are wanted!” No amount of riches or trips or any sort of What might have been (without children) would compel me to trade the life I have right now. We can’t really afford taking trips. We certainly can’t afford fancy jewelry. I stay home most days with my girls, and compared to most, my social life is about as thrilling as a janitor’s closet.
Yet everyday, I feel rich. And I think they are a large part of that.
Here is the full poem in case you can’t read the picture. I want to make a poster or print of this poem. I wish I knew the title of this poem! It’s beautiful.
You are the trip I did not take;
you are the pearls I could not buy.
You are my blue Italian lake;
you are my piece of foreign sky.
You are my Honolulu moon;
you are the book I did not write.
you are my heart’s unuttered tune;
you are a candle in my night.
You are the flower beneath the snow;
In my dark sky, a bit of blue
answering Disappointment’s blow,
with “I am happy! I have you!”
